The return of fall…

As the nights begin to cool and a few trees are starting to show hues of red and yellow, I cherish the feeling in the air that the return of fall is near.  I am reminded of old memories, of crisp morning air, the lingering smell of a campfire burning in the distance, the warmth of cinnamon spiced apples cooking in the oven, and the song of the wind chime tinkling playfully in the breeze.  This is my favorite time of year for each of these reasons, and for a thousand others.  With a million things to do to prepare for the looming winter don’t forget to take just a little time out and enjoy the wonderful season of harvest, with all it’s smells, colors, and textures.  The Farmer’s Almanac says there will be snow on both Thanksgiving and Christmas this year, so stock up on freshly seasoned and chopped wood early.  I hope we need at least a cord this year!  Now is also the time to consider your cold weather survival bug-out kit and vehicle pack.  May I also recommend that you stock up on survival supplies for your home because North Carolina winters often come with heavy ice that can put you without electricity for a while.  This isn’t a bad thing in my opinion.  It pushes you to stay ready for anything, forces you to turn off the TV, and adds old fashioned flavor to the season by letting you warm yourself by the fire while reading a good book by candlelight.  I say bring on the bad weather, ’cause poppa is in the mood for hot cocoa!
